Leon rolled down the windows and welcomed the bite of the cool autumn morning. It was at times like this that he had trouble remembering he had been in love with Brenda since he was fourteen years old. He had met Brenda the summer before ninth grade. His grandmother had forced him and his younger sister Lula to go to a Sunday school convention in Birmingham, Alabama.

Leon remembered the day.…

He almost wished he had decided to go pick cotton with Eddie as he rode in the back of his Uncle Otis’ pickup truck. He hated every minute of the almost two-hour ride between Birmingham and his hometown of Mountain Brook, Alabama. He spent his time blocking out his sister’s non-stop chattering by devising a plan to ditch the Sunday school convention and see some of the big city. He had just thought up a fool-proof escape plan and a way to buy his sister’s silence, when Uncle Otis’ pickup truck pulled up behind several cars in front of Allen Chapel AME Church.

“Leon! Leon!” Otis called. “Boy, grab your bag and get out this truck.” Otis followed his nephew’s gaze over to the pretty, smiling face of one of the youth greeters. Otis let out a huge laugh. “Look like this Sunday school convention ain’t gone be so hard on you after all. Huh, Nephew?”

“What you talking about, Uncle Otis?” Leon asked. He smoothed down his shirt and hopped out the truck bed. “I love Sunday school conventions.”

“Yeah, right,” Otis said and shook his head. “You keep up with Lula and don’t let that pretty little thing get your behind in no trouble. Your grandmother sent you here to get right with Jesus.” Otis laughed again. His nephew’s interest in the pretty girl brought back fond memories of a few Sunday school conventions from his youth.

“Uncle Otis, tell Grandma you left me standing among angels,” Leon said. He slapped his uncle on the back and headed toward the welcoming committee table.

As Leon’s memory receded, he said aloud, “I wonder where the girl I met all those years ago went.” He scratched his head and continued to drive down the street.
